What is the difference between 24V and 12V low-voltage light strips

December 13, 2022 284

Low voltage LED strip lights are becoming more and more popular because they offer greater safety and stability. The most common low voltage light strip applications are 12V and 24V LED light strips, and while they may be similar in appearance, there are actually some important differences. This article will delve into the differences between these two types of light strips to help you make an informed choice in your lighting decor.

1. Voltage Discrepancy

The most prominent dissimilarity lies in voltage. 12V and 24V LED strips operate at 12 volts and 24 volts, respectively. Generally, 24V LED strips offer higher brightness at the same power, making them ideal for larger spaces or areas requiring more intense illumination. On the other hand, 12V LED strips are suitable for smaller spaces or settings with relatively lower lighting demands.

2. Installation and Connectivity

12V and 24V light strips also differ in terms of installation and connection. Normally 12V light strips over 5 metres will have a voltage drop generated and therefore need to be replenished every 5 metres. The 24V strip is replenished every 10 or 20 metres, so it requires less power and is easier to install.

12V strip light is more suitable for short distance installation, such as home decoration. 24V strip light is more suitable for engineering long distance installation.

Comparison of different voltage differences

Feature 12V LED Strip 24V LED Strip
Voltage 12 volts 24 volts
Brightness Generally lower Generally higher
Installation and Wiring Requires thicker wires, somewhat complex Uses smaller diameter wires, more flexible installation
Safety Higher current, higher risk of electric shock Lower current, lower risk of electric shock
Line Losses Greater Lesser
Suitable for Smaller areas, budget-conscious Larger spaces, high illumination demands
Cost Relatively lower Relatively higher
Energy Efficiency Relatively lower Relatively higher
